Setting goals for yourself is a great way to be productive and to feel accomplished. But knowing just how to set those goals can be a challenge. You don’t want them to be too simple because you’d blow through those goals in no time, but not really get anywhere. But you also don’t want to set the bar too high right off the bat because if you don’t achieve that status, then you’ll feel like a failure and likely give up.

You need to have something attainable to work towards. And to do that, you will need to do a little work. Here are seven steps to setting personal development goals.

How to Set Personal Development Goals in Seven Easy Steps

1. Figure out what it is you hope to achieve in life. Whether this is personally or professionally, sitting down to figure out what your end game is in all of this is a very important first step. But this isn’t all. You can’t just say that you want to be married and start a family in ten years and be done. You need to do more.

2. Figure out the ways you can achieve your goal. Do you need more education? Do you need to find that special someone still? Are you in a job that is going to set you up for success and get you where you want to be ten years down the road? This is your starting point. Now you know where you are and where you want to be so you can set up small attainable goals to get you there. In one year you’ll have a new job, or be in school.

3. Stay the course. You have to constantly adjust your smaller goals to get to your ultimate end goal. So review your goals regularly and make sure they fit. Make yourself checklists each day to help you achieve your goals.

4. Be specific in your goals. Don’t just say “Get a new job.” Say “Get a new job by February 1, 2015.”

5. Write it all down. Having something to look at and even physically check off as achieved makes it more real and something more actionable.

6. Prioritize your goals. Setting priorities will help keep you on track to achieve your ultimate goal.

7. Celebrate your achievements. No matter how small the goal might be, take the time to celebrate that it has been achieved. It doesn’t have to be a huge deal, but even just rewarding yourself with a small gift will do wonders for your self-esteem and pushing you forward to continuing to achieve your goals.

Having a timeline of expectations is a great way to keep pushing you forward. So if you follow all of these steps, then you will be very successful. Instead of just talking about what you want out of life, you’ll actually be doing what needs to be done for you to actually achieve what you want out of life.
